The PAWS (Philippine Animal Welfare Society) animal shelter has a monthly overhead cost of P75,000 - an amount that goes to the purchase of food and medicine for the animals and the payment of utilities and allowances for our skeletal staff of six.

Monthly donations do not even reach 1/4 of the amount of overhead expenses and so we have to organize a lot of local fundraising events just to get by.

DINE WITH PAWS is our biggest fundraiser this year. Help us keep our shelter so that we can continue help animals.

I just found out today that Anastasia, one of my nomss friends, has gone missing for almost 6 days now. This is terrible news. My human and I offer our prayers to her and her family. I really hope she just got lost or something but they say that this is very unusual of her to not come home for days and they suspect that she must have been taken by wildlife. I’m hoping, and I’m sure everyone else is too, that a miracle happens and that she will be able to come back home safe.

Come back home Anastasia! Everyone misses you so much.

Making friends is fun! And just because I’m a dog doesn’t mean I limit myself to making friends with my own kind only. I am happy to have 2 new friends — Karl and Anastasia of The Cat Realm. They have chosen me to be their nomss (not-of-my-species-special-friend) friends.

This is about the call to help save dogs from Dog Meat Trade. Everyone, please help. You don’t have to spend or buy anything, no need to travel anywhere. All you have to do is go to this link and sign in your name. That’s it. It will take no longer than 5 minutes of your time. This online petition ends on June 30, 2007. They need to obtain at least 50,000 signatures by JUNE 30, 2007 in time for the Congress session on July 2007. I think the list has a long way to go because there are only around 29,300 signatures as of today. Just 3 more days to go, but still 20,700 more signatures needed.

Look at these dogs. They need our help now.

A Brief History of the Dog Meat Trade

Traditionally, dogs were sacrificed and their meat eaten when a family was faced with bad luck, or when a death was witnessed. It was the belief that a dog’s spirit protected and guarded the spirits of the living family. However, this was an infrequent practice. Greed and corruption has evolved the ritual into a massacre of over 500,000 dogs a year in the Philippines as a commercial industry. Although most Filipinos detest the practice and do not eat dog meat, it is still concentrated in areas in and around Baguio City and the Cordilleras Region.

Dog meat eating has existed as a long-standing cultural phenomenon in the Northern provinces of the Philippines. Historically, this ritual practice accounted for a relatively small number of animals. However, over the past 25 years, dog meat eating has rapidly proliferated for commercial rather than cultural reasons. Today, despite a national law banning dog meat eating, a multitude of restaurants exist exclusively to sell dog meat, and current estimates indicate up to half a million dogs are slaughtered and consumed commercially every year in the Philippines. Lack of enforcement and minimal penalties for convicted dog meat traders allow this cruel industry to thrive.

Call on the government of the Philippines to institute stronger laws and enforcement so that this cruel and illegal practice can be eliminated once and for all.
